As discussed in the last edition of Velocity, when you have been awarded an exemption, you need to make sure that you have the necessary underpinning knowledge before moving up through the qualification.
To give yourself the best chance of passing, you need to feel confident, at each stage, that you have a sound knowledge and skills base to support further studies.
This is particularly true of certain papers.
For example, C1 Management Accounting Fundamentals provides essential underpinnings for P1 Management Accounting Performance Evaluation at Managerial level. Many students are exempt from some or all of the Certificate level papers - if this is you, stop and think before entering for P1.
If your exemptions relate to a qualification you did a while ago or include topics you struggled with (be honest with yourself here), you may have a knowledge gap.
This doesn't necessarily mean that you need to waive your exemption/s but you should go through the syllabi of any papers for which you are exempt (ideally with a tutor or recently qualified CIMA Member) and make sure you understand the content.
'CIMA Managerial studies' is a new book aimed primarily at Managerial students new to CIMA who have exemptions from the Certificate in Business Accounting.
