08 November 2004

Andrew Skipp, Managing Director of Bristol International Airport was the guest speaker at the CIMA President’s luncheon held at the Thistle Hotel, Bristol this week.

Andrew was welcomed to the celebration by Professor Roland Kaye, CIMA President and Charles Tilley, CIMA Chief Executive.

Charles highlighted the reason why CIMA is so strong in the sectors for which the Bristol area is renowned – aerospace, financial services, defence, tourism and agriculture:

“Increasingly this region attracts new industries from hi-tech to telecoms and bio technology, all requiring the skills for which Chartered Management Accountants are so prized and are in ever greater demand. They are able to use financial and management information to really drive their businesses forward.

Within the South West and South Wales , we have 8,400 members and students. Among them, over 1000 are in senior managerial positions. Of those members who have kept their details up to date with us, we know that within this region there are 8 Chief Executive Officers, 36 Group Financial Controllers or Directors, 250 Finance Directors, 23 Chief Accountants, 10 Group Management Accountants and 96 Managing Directors.”

Andrew Skipp has played a major role in the development of Bristol International into one of the UK ’s most successful regional airports. He has been a member of CIMA for over 20 years having become an Associate in 1984 and accepted as a Fellow of the Institute in 1995. In the three years of his stewardship Bristol International Airport ’s progress includes:

  • Doubled passenger throughput from 2.5m passengers to nearly five million per annum.
  • Increased number of scheduled destinations to 37 – with 11 new routes announced in the last 12 months.
  • Increased charter destinations to around 50.
  • Won the daily Continental Airline scheduled service to New York/Newark, due for launch in May 2005.

Andrew said:

“4.5m South West residents, together with the huge potential for inbound tourism and the increased propensity to fly more often, driven by low fares, will provide the mainstay of our growth over the coming years.”

The luncheon attended by captains of industry in the Bristol area included senior managers from companies such as, Allied Domecq, Deloitte and Touche and Allied Irish Bank.
